Scientists from IIT Madras and IISc have synthesized a carbon-free analog of ferrocene by replacing traditional carbon rings with boron-based ligands. This new complex uses osmium to create a stable sandwich structure that mimics the architecture of ferrocene but offers stronger bonding properties. This breakthrough demonstrates that the sandwich motif is not exclusive to carbon chemistry. By using boron clusters, researchers can now design new materials with unique electronic properties, opening doors for advanced catalysis and industrial material design without relying on carbon-based frameworks.
