Renault and Geely, through their joint venture Horse, plan to launch a methanol-fueled range extender for electric vehicles in 2026. The system uses a small onboard engine running on methanol to generate electricity, allowing drivers to refuel in minutes instead of waiting for a charge. Aramco is supporting the fuel supply side. The target markets include taxis, commercial fleets, and drivers in areas with limited charging infrastructure. The climate impact depends on whether the methanol is low-carbon. Fossil-derived methanol offers limited CO2 savings, while biomethanol or e-methanol from captured CO2 and renewable hydrogen could reduce lifecycle emissions. The system may lower battery costs by allowing smaller packs, but adds complexity and maintenance. Real-world adoption will hinge on fuel availability, regulation, and total cost of ownership for fleet operators.
