Remscheid Germany industrial decarbonization struggle shows Europe green policy challenges
reuters.comA Reuters report on the German city of Remscheid shows how hard industrial electrification really is. The city is home to steel forger Dirostahl and pasta maker Steinhaus, both trying to cut emissions. Dirostahl uses ten times more gas than electricity to heat furnaces to 1,200 degrees Celsius. Switching to electricity would more than double energy costs. Green hydrogen would make bills five times higher. The company has maxed out efficiency measures but sees no viable business case for the next step. The EU wants electricity to reach 46% of Europe's energy mix by 2040. But in Remscheid, grid fees have exploded since 2021 and German electricity prices are nearly three times gas prices. Even wind turbine makers refuse to pay a premium for lower carbon steel parts. The article warns that without affordable alternatives, decarbonisation risks becoming deindustrialisation. EU states spend under 10% of 40 billion euros in annual carbon market revenue on actual decarbonisation projects.
