The EU-funded REDWine project has developed a system to capture CO2 and wastewater from wine production to grow microalgae. This process can reduce the carbon footprint of the wine value chain by over 30% while creating bio-based products for use in agriculture, cosmetics, and food. To make the technology viable for different scales of production, the project proposes three business models: on-site integration for large wineries, regional biorefineries, and cooperative bio-hubs for smaller producers. These models aim to turn waste streams into new revenue sources through the sale of biomass and bioactive compounds.
