Researchers from Purdue University Northwest, in collaboration with Nucor and Linde, are using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to optimize Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) refining. By simulating the interaction between molten steel and slag, the team found that adjusting oxygen injection can significantly reduce FeO formation. Lowering FeO levels reduces the need for carbon injection during slag foaming. This adjustment can cut operating costs and lower overall CO2 emissions in steel production without significantly compromising decarburization performance.
