The point about 20 to 30 year lifecycles is the real killer here. Most plant managers will not rip out a working press just for a marginal efficiency gain unless the payback is under two years. The shift to OpEx models is the only way this actually scales.

The gap here is in the reporting standards. Most carbon accounting for Scope 2 looks at the bill, not the waste. If we had tighter regulations on energy intensity per unit of production, these retrofits would move from nice to have to mandatory very quickly.

Interesting read. Basically says we are throwing away 10 to 20 percent of factory power as heat because the old way of fixing it was too expensive. Now that power prices are higher, the math finally works for retrofits.
