Reducing Embodied Carbon in Infrastructure: Structural Efficiency and Material Innovation
infrastructure-now.co.ukThe Institution of Structural Engineers is shifting focus toward structural systems to lower embodied carbon. Rather than just substituting materials, the goal is to design more efficient systems, such as moving away from carbon intensive flat concrete slabs toward compressed structures like arches and vaults. Innovation in high strength steels and stainless steel is also being leveraged to reduce the total volume of material required for infrastructure. Additionally, the industry is exploring design for disassembly, which allows structural steel to be reused and can potentially cut embodied carbon by 99 percent compared to new builds.
