A study from EPFL and international partners shows that existing construction technologies could cut carbon emissions from cement and steel by 73% by 2050. The research emphasizes that sustainable growth in low and middle income countries does not have to drive emissions up if the right materials and methods are used. Key strategies include replacing high emissions clinker with low carbon alternatives, improving structural design to reduce waste, and increasing the use of recycled materials powered by renewable energy. While these steps provide a massive reduction, full decarbonization will still require advanced carbon capture and updated regulatory standards.
