New research from Stanford challenges the idea that decarbonizing cement production must lead to extreme cost hikes. By analyzing emission reduction levers, the study suggests that significant cuts are possible with manageable increases in production costs. If carbon prices in Europe rise, producers could potentially reduce emissions by 96% with a cost increase of around 12%. This methodology for calculating abatement costs can also be applied to other heavy industries like steel and aluminum.
