A peer-reviewed study found that replacing half of the virgin expanded polystyrene (EPS) with post-consumer recycled material can cut the global warming potential of the resin by about 45 percent. The research, conducted by university scientists and industry partners including EPS supplier Epsilyte, showed that the recycled blend maintains the same protective performance in bicycle helmets. This suggests that recycled EPS can lower the carbon footprint of helmet manufacturing without compromising safety. The study focuses on a practical application where material substitution directly reduces emissions. For helmet makers and recyclers, this offers a clear path to decarbonize a common product. The findings also highlight the potential for recycled plastics to compete with virgin materials in demanding safety applications, which could drive broader adoption across other sectors.
