Reclinker, a Cardiff company, has raised £10 million to expand production of low-carbon cement from demolition waste. The funding round was led by Clean Growth Fund and AP Ventures, with the Development Bank of Wales also backing the company. Reclinker has already completed industrial trials with 7 Steel UK and made its first commercial sales. The company uses electric furnaces at steel recycling sites to recover cement paste from demolished buildings and turn it back into clinker. This avoids the dedicated kiln, fresh limestone, and fossil fuel heating used in conventional cement production. Reclinker expects its blended cement to offer an initial 50% emissions reduction, and it is targeting production of 120,000 tonnes a year in Cardiff before expanding to steel plants in Europe and the US.
