Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd, the operator behind Rapid KL and Rapid Penang, plans to bring 1,600 electric buses into service by 2031. The first phase covers 250 buses at a cost of RM200 million, with 175 assigned to Rapid KL and 75 to Rapid Penang. Deliveries for the first 150 buses began in June 2026, and the remaining 100 are expected to be delivered by March 2027. The move supports Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap and its push for a lower-carbon public transport system. To keep the fleet running, Prasarana is installing 150 charging units across nine depots for the first stage and another 100 units at six depots for the second stage. As of mid-October 2026, 52 buses had been received, so the program is moving from announcement to deployment.
