Raji Doshi, 13, Wins 2026 3M Young Scientist Challenge for Ocean Acidification Algae-Aragonite System
indianewengland.comRaji Doshi, a 13-year-old from Farmington, Connecticut, won the 2026 3M Young Scientist Challenge for ALKACORE, a system that pairs macroalgae with aragonite, a natural calcium carbonate mineral, to address ocean acidification. The project uses natural materials to raise seawater alkalinity and lower dissolved carbon dioxide, with a computational model to size the aragonite dose. Doshi took home a $25,000 prize after the finals at 3M headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota. Ocean acidification happens when seawater absorbs excess atmospheric CO2, which makes it harder for shellfish and other organisms to build calcium carbonate shells. Doshi's project targets that chemistry at a local scale. The competition included 10 finalists, and the runners-up were Aaisha Asif and Sharvi Mahajan.
