Rajasthan biochar plants show promise but face mercury and pathogen safety issues: CSE report
carboncopy.infoA new report from the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) evaluated 39 faecal sludge treatment plants in Rajasthan that use pyrolysis to turn human waste into biochar, a carbon rich material that can lock carbon in soil for centuries. The study found that most plants effectively treat liquid waste, removing over 90% of suspended solids and 95% of organic pollutants. The biochar and biosolids produced meet nutrient standards for organic fertilizer, offering a potential substitute for chemical fertilizers while sequestering carbon. However, the report flagged serious safety gaps. Mercury exceeded limits at 15 biochar sites and nearly all biosolid locations. Pathogen levels including E. coli and Salmonella remained high in biosolids at almost every plant, and none of the 25 larger facilities met USEPA or WHO pathogen standards for open agricultural use. The researchers recommend tighter temperature control during pyrolysis, better drying conditions, and additional treatment steps like reverse osmosis to address dissolved solids and heavy metal contamination.
