Rain Carbon and BioBTX partner on renewable aromatics from plastic waste
business-standard.comRain Carbon and BioBTX have signed a collaboration to produce renewable aromatic chemicals from plastic waste. BioBTX reached a final investment decision in July 2026 for its first commercial plant in Delfzijl, the Netherlands, which will use its Integrated Catalytic Cracking Process to make around 10,000 tonnes per year of renewable aromatic oil. The plant is expected to start up in early 2028. Under the deal, Rain Carbon will convert that oil into benzene, phthalic anhydride, and other aromatic derivatives. The aim is to match the quality of fossil-based products so chemical buyers can lower supply chain emissions without changing processes. The project is still small against the conventional aromatics market, and details on feedstock supply and carbon accounting will matter. Still, it is one of the first commercial scale moves in circular aromatics, not just a pilot announcement.
