Railway tunnel heat could supply 6,000 UK homes with low carbon heating from Northern Powerhouse Rail

The energy tunnel system works by embedding pipes in tunnel linings to absorb heat from the ground, trains, and equipment, then using a heat pump to transfer that energy to the surface for district heating. The study estimates this could generate 54 to 98 GWh of heat per year, enough for 5,000 to 6,000 households, and cut carbon emissions by 2,000 to 3,500 tonnes annually compared to gas boilers. The additional construction cost is estimated at just 0.2% of the total railway project cost, and researchers say the system could pay for itself through energy savings. A hospital and a local authority near the route have already expressed interest in connecting directly. The Department for Transport is reviewing the findings for potential inclusion in planning requirements. However, the researchers note that few commercial energy tunnel schemes exist globally, and previous attempts during Crossrail and HS2 did not proceed. They urge early planning and cross-departmental support to make this viable for the 2030s construction timeline.
