RADIX and Abertay University build carbon calculator to measure foundation emissions
dundeeculture.comRADIX, a Dundee engineering firm, worked with Abertay University MSc student Emir Tashbaev to build a carbon calculator for building foundations. The tool estimates embodied carbon across the full foundation life cycle, including manufacturing, transport, installation, and end of life. RADIX tested it on two construction projects, one a battery energy storage site in North Yorkshire, and found its screw pile systems produced lower carbon emissions than traditional concrete foundations in both cases. The company designs, manufactures, and installs screw piles and ground screws as alternatives to concrete. It was founded in 2019 and now employs 22 people. The new calculator is meant to help clients see potential carbon savings from choosing screw piles over poured concrete. The project is part of a broader push to connect university research with local industry. Abertay and RADIX are exploring follow-up work, including an undergraduate research project and a Knowledge Transfer Partnership.
