Raasay ferry store becomes solar-powered venison facility in Scottish island carbon neutral push
wired-gov.netA historic ferry store on the Isle of Raasay is being converted into a community-owned venison processing facility as part of Scotland's Carbon Neutral Islands programme. The project, backed by nearly 129,000 pounds in funding, will use solar power to process deer locally, cutting around 136 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. It eliminates the need to transport carcasses off the island and includes butchery training and a school education programme on sustainable land management. The Raasay facility is one of several projects across five islands receiving a combined 750,000 pounds in the latest funding round. Other investments include solar panels and battery storage for homes on Great Cumbrae, community hall upgrades on Barra and Hoy, and renewable energy retrofits on Islay. The Scottish Government says the total investment in the Carbon Neutral Islands programme has reached 4.65 million pounds since 2021, with a goal of making these islands carbon neutral by 2040.
