Quantum Computing for Carbon Capture and Biofuel Research

Researchers at the University of Illinois are developing a new benchmarking system to test how quantum computers simulate complex molecules. This project, supported by a grant from the Discovery Partners Institute, focuses on the behavior of carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons to improve carbon utilization and biofuel efficiency. By partnering with BP and qBraid, the team aims to create an open source database that determines when quantum algorithms can realistically outperform classical computers in chemistry. This could accelerate the discovery of new materials for decarbonizing heavy industry.
