Quang Ngai province in central Vietnam is moving forest carbon credits from concept to pilot. The province has about 826,000 hectares of forest, split between 604,000 hectares of natural forest and 222,000 hectares of planted forest. Provincial officials say those forests absorb and store roughly 2 million tons of carbon a year, and the region is set to receive around 1.13 million credits under the LEAF initiative for the South Central and Central Highlands. The province is running pilots with Dak To Forestry Company, Kon Ray Forestry Company, and Dak Ha Protective Forest Management Board to test carbon measurement methods across different forest types. A full forest survey and inventory is due by 2027, which will give project developers the baseline data needed for verification and registration. The key constraint is that estimated sequestration is not the same as tradeable credits. Projects still need to meet specific standards, pass measurement, reporting and verification, and get recognized before credits can be sold. The article lays out how Quang Ngai is trying to build that pipeline.
