On the engine front, he argued that even as batteries grow, the engine remains critical for plug-in hybrids. Data from 10,000 GL8 PHEV users showed 73.4% electric mileage, but the depleted battery scenarios define user experience. PATAC's ninth generation Ecotec engine achieves 43.26% measured peak thermal efficiency, improving fuel economy by over 10% when the battery is depleted. The takeaway: real world carbon accounting matters more than regulatory numbers, and powertrain diversification is not going away.
