QBE and supply chain launch UK insurance sector's first collective rewilding scheme for carbon credits
insurancebusinessmag.comQBE and seven firms from its claims supply chain have formed the QBE Buyers Club, a consortium co-investing in nature restoration and carbon credit generation at Boothby Wildland in Lincolnshire. The 50-year commitment funds rewilding on a former intensive arable farm, with carbon removal across 18 dedicated acres and an estimated 25,000 verified credits over 100 years under the UK Woodland Carbon Code. The project includes beaver reintroduction and draws on research showing rewilded soil can sequester carbon at rates comparable to new woodland. The initiative responds to record UK weather claims of £585 million in 2024 and growing regulatory pressure from the PRA's updated climate risk rules. Insurers must integrate climate risk across operations by June 2026, pushing firms to show credible value-chain action. The consortium model gives each partner a direct stake in the land, allowing them to visit and see changes. This is the first formal supply-chain-led nature restoration consortium in UK insurance, potentially setting a precedent for private investment in nature-based carbon removal.
