QatarEnergy has received contractor bids for a major expansion of its low-carbon ammonia and urea production complex in Mesaieed Industrial City. The project aims to add 6.4 million tonnes per year of output, doubling Qatar's urea capacity to over 12.4 million tonnes annually. The expansion includes blue ammonia and urea plants, a 400MW power unit, desalination, and new export berths. Contractors like Tecnimont, Samsung E&A, and Saipem are among those invited to bid for the EPC contract, with technology providers required as part of the process. The project is part of QatarEnergy's broader push into low-carbon ammonia and urea, which are key for decarbonizing fertilizer production and industrial heat. The company is also building a separate 1.2 million tonne per year blue ammonia facility with carbon capture and storage, expected to start operations this year. That facility will be powered partly by solar from a plant under construction in Mesaieed. The expansion aligns with global demand for low-carbon fertilizers and could support emissions reductions in agriculture and heavy industry, though the timeline for FID and construction remains uncertain after multiple bid deadline extensions.
