Qatar's Mangrove Forests Cover 14 sq km, Store Carbon and Support Coastal Ecosystems
qatar-tribune.comQatar's mangrove forests now cover an estimated 14 square kilometers, with over half located in the Al Thakhira Reserve. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change announced this on International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, highlighting the role of mangroves in carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and coastal protection. According to the ministry, one hectare of mangrove forest can store the equivalent of about 3,754 tonnes of carbon dioxide, making these ecosystems among the most efficient natural carbon sinks. The government is pursuing a strategy that combines protecting existing forests, encouraging natural regeneration, and expanding plantations in suitable locations through scientific studies of tidal movement, soil composition, and salinity. The ministry emphasized that successful conservation is not just about planting trees but managing the whole ecosystem. Mangroves also support fisheries, stabilize shorelines, and attract eco-tourism to areas like Al Thakhira Reserve. The public is urged to avoid damaging trees or dumping waste in these habitats.
