Q3 CBAM Certificate Price Rises to EUR82.32 per Tonne, Adding to Aluminium Import Costs
news.metal.comThe European Commission set the CBAM certificate price for Q3 2026 at EUR82.32 per tonne of CO2 equivalent, up 9.35% from EUR75.28 in Q2. The increase follows EU ETS auction prices and a scheduled drop in auction supply. For aluminium importers, the higher price raises the carbon cost on products that require net certificates, especially those with higher default emissions or lower free allocation. Under SMM's 2026 default-value calculation, Chinese unwrought aluminium now carries about EUR157.44 per tonne in CBAM cost, while a hollow-profile example is around EUR322.15 per tonne. SMM expects Q4 certificate prices to land between EUR85 and EUR90, depending on winter electricity demand and the share of fossil generation. Buyers should track customs codes, origin, and the specific calculation method when assessing contract exposure.
