Puro Registry Hits 1 Million Retired CORCs: What It Means for Carbon Removal Markets
carbonherald.comPuro.earth announced that its Puro Registry has passed 1 million retired CO2 Removal Certificates (CORCs), each representing one tonne of CO2 permanently removed from the atmosphere. The milestone reflects a shift in the voluntary carbon removal market, with buyers retiring credits faster than before. Average time from issuance to retirement dropped from 510 days in 2019 to just 7 days in 2026, according to registry data. Retirements grew 140% in 2024 and another 112% in 2025. The number of CORC beneficiaries increased 4.7x between 2020 and 2025. Biochar made up 48.1% of retired CORCs, followed by geologically stored carbon at 33.3%, carbonated materials at 4%, and smaller shares from terrestrial biomass storage, enhanced rock weathering, and other pathways. Puro says the data shows buyers have moved from one-off purchases to systematic, repeatable procurement. The CORCs are third-party verified and tracked on the registry, designed for durable carbon dioxide removal with permanence over 100 years or more. Puro.earth President Jan-Willem Bode said the results show the market is now visible, measurable, and repeatable after years of patience and rigor from suppliers and buyers.
