Puro.earth certifies first permanent carbon removal from biogas at Norway wastewater plant
biomassmagazine.comPuro.earth has certified the world's first permanent carbon removal project tied to biogas production. The VEAS wastewater treatment plant in Norway captures biogenic CO2 released during biogas production and stores it geologically. Inherit Carbon Solutions developed the project, with HoopCO2 handling capture and Northern Lights providing transport and storage 2,600 meters below the seabed. The project issued over 700 CO2 Removal Certificates (CORCs) for its first four months of operation. It demonstrates a replicable model for connecting existing biogas infrastructure with carbon storage. Northern Lights, which started storing fossil CO2 in 2025, will store up to 7,000 metric tons of biogenic CO2 per year from this site. This is Puro.earth's first BECCS certification in Europe and the first time biogenic CO2 from biogas has been permanently stored. The approach turns a wastewater byproduct into verifiable carbon removal and could scale across the biogas sector globally.
