Puro.earth certifies first BECCS carbon removal from biogas at Norway wastewater plant
bioenergy-news.comPuro.earth has issued the first CO2 Removal Certificates for a BECCS project at the VEAS wastewater treatment plant in Norway. The project captures biogenic CO2 from biogas production, liquefies it, and stores it permanently 2,600 meters below the seabed via the Northern Lights transport and storage system. Over 700 CORCs were issued for the first four months of operation from February to May 2026. The project was developed by Inherit Carbon Solutions with capture by HoopCO2 and storage by Northern Lights JV. It uses Puro.earth's Geologically Stored Carbon methodology and third-party verification. The site is expected to supply up to 7,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. Puro.earth says the model could be replicated across the biogas sector globally. This is a concrete example of linking existing biogas infrastructure with permanent geological storage to generate verifiable carbon removal credits. The certification provides a route to market for biogenic CO2 removal and demonstrates how wastewater treatment plants can become carbon removal assets.
