Puro.earth Certifies Europe's First Biogas BECCS Project for Permanent Carbon Removal at Norway's VEAS Plant
carboncredits.comPuro.earth has certified Europe's first permanent carbon removal project using biogas BECCS at Norway's VEAS wastewater treatment plant. The project captures biogenic CO2 from biogas production and stores it underground via Northern Lights, earning over 700 CO2 Removal Certificates in its first four months. This marks a shift from fossil-based storage to permanent carbon removal from organic waste. The project involves Inherit Carbon Solutions, HoopCO2, and Northern Lights. Liquefied CO2 is trucked to a terminal then injected 2,600 meters below the North Sea. Up to 7,000 metric tons of biogenic CO2 will be stored annually. This demonstrates how wastewater infrastructure can support engineered carbon removal at scale across Europe.
