Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced the rollout of Pakistan's first EPA-certified Liquid Tree, a bioreactor system that uses microalgae to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. The technology was developed after testing over 100 algae species from across the country over seven months, with the most effective strain found in Sukkur, Sindh, and cultivated with Government College University, Faisalabad. The system includes an AI-based calculator for real-time carbon absorption and oxygen release data. In the first phase, Liquid Trees will be installed at major shopping malls in both indoor and outdoor settings. The initiative aims to reduce urban pollution and smog, with the chief minister describing it as a game changer for environmental improvement in Punjab.
