The Punjab government is scaling up its Liquid Tree initiative, deploying microalgae-based systems to absorb carbon dioxide in urban areas where planting real trees is difficult. The project, run by the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency, has collected over 100 microalgae varieties from across Pakistan and will place installations in shopping malls and public spaces to reduce air pollution and smog. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz confirmed the first EPA-certified liquid tree will move from Faisalabad to Lahore as part of the expansion. The initiative is part of a broader environmental push that includes demolishing fat-melting units, banning thin plastic bags, and requiring green buffer zones around industrial sites. The project aims to provide a practical, technology-based solution for cleaner air in cities.
