The Punjab government is expanding its Liquid Tree project, a biotechnology initiative that uses microalgae to absorb carbon dioxide and improve air quality in urban spaces where planting real trees is not feasible. The project is managed by the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency and will see the first EPA-certified liquid tree relocated from Faisalabad to Lahore. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced that over 100 species of microalgae have been collected from across Pakistan to support the project. During the first phase, liquid trees will be installed in shopping malls and other public indoor and outdoor spaces. The initiative is positioned as a practical, science-based response to rising CO2 levels and smog in Pakistan's cities.
