Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced the expansion of Pakistan's first EPA-certified Liquid Tree project to combat urban pollution. The system uses microalgae cultivated in water to absorb carbon dioxide from the air, with an AI-based calculator providing real-time data on CO2 absorption and oxygen release. Over 100 algae species were tested across seven months, with the most effective one found in Sukkur, Sindh, and cultivated with GCU Faisalabad. In the first phase, Liquid Trees will be installed at major shopping malls in both indoor and outdoor settings. The technology is designed to mimic natural trees in improving environmental quality in dense urban areas. This marks the first EPA certification of its kind since 1987, signaling a new regulatory step for carbon removal technologies in the region.
