Prysmian is manufacturing electrical cable from ELYSIS aluminum for installation in an Amazon data center in Ohio. ELYSIS technology replaces traditional carbon anodes with inert materials, so the smelting process emits oxygen instead of direct greenhouse gases. Rio Tinto supplied the aluminum from its Quebec operations, which already run on hydropower, and Wesco is handling distribution to the project site. The project is described as the first known use of inert anode smelted aluminum in a data center. It builds on the Prysmian and Rio Tinto collaboration announced in March 2026 to introduce aluminum building wire made with ELYSIS technology. The move targets embodied carbon in the electrical supply chain, not just operational energy use, and gives a concrete deployment signal for lower carbon materials in fast growing digital infrastructure.
