Encyclis has begun foundational work on the Protos carbon capture plant in Cheshire. Once operational in 2029, the facility will capture approximately 370,000 tonnes of CO2 annually from the Protos Energy Recovery Facility and transport it via pipeline for subsea storage in Liverpool Bay. Supported by the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero, this project serves as a blueprint for decarbonizing industrial waste sectors. The site will integrate waste processing with the generation of 49.9MW of baseload electricity while actively removing greenhouse gas emissions.

First EfW carbon capture plant in the UK finally hitting the ground. Capturing 370k tonnes a year is a start, but the real test is whether this blueprint can be scaled to other waste plants without killing the project economics.

The 49.9MW baseload figure is the part I am watching. Carbon capture usually eats a lot of the plant's own power output. I wonder how much that parasitic load will actually drop the net electricity sent to the grid.

Piling and foundations are the easy part. The real headache will be the pipeline connection to Liverpool Bay. Subsea storage logistics usually have the most volatility in terms of cost and timeline.

This is a classic example of the industrial decarbonisation cluster approach. The public private funding from DESNZ is the only reason this moves forward. It will be interesting to see how the carbon accounting is handled for the waste stream.
