Project Goose Lake CCS testing wells raise Chicot Aquifer concerns in Louisiana
1012industryreport.comGulf Coast Sequestration is seeking a Louisiana coastal use permit for Project Goose Lake, two Class V carbon capture testing wells and one drinking-water monitoring well near the Intracoastal Canal and Sabine National Wildlife Refuge. The site sits on the Cameron-Calcasieu parish line, and the company says the land is already privately owned by its founders. The permit drew opposition at a public hearing from Calcasieu Parish residents worried about the Chicot Aquifer, which supplies drinking water for 15 parishes from Southwest Louisiana to Acadiana. Opponents say carbon sequestration could threaten that water supply. GCS argues the geology is well suited for the project. Louisiana's Department of Conservation and Energy is reviewing the Goose Lake permit and also preparing a final decision on GCS's separate Project Minerva in Cameron Parish. Both projects are exempt from the state's CCS moratorium and are on the governor's priority list.
