Principality Stadium installs 3,296 solar panels on roof, cutting carbon by 220,000 kg per year
nation.cymruThe Principality Stadium in Cardiff has installed 3,296 solar panels on its roof, now the largest solar panel system on a sports stadium in the UK. The panels are expected to generate around 1.25 million kWh of electricity per year, enough to power over 50 matchdays at the 74,000 seat venue. The Welsh Rugby Union estimates the system will cut the stadium's annual carbon emissions by nearly 220,000 kg and lower energy costs. The project was delivered by renewable energy firm EvoEnergy and is part of a broader sustainability push by the WRU. Other measures at the stadium include rainwater harvesting, a well water abstraction system for cleaning and irrigation, and LED lighting upgrades. The WRU plans to publish its first sustainability strategy later this year as part of its five year One Wales strategy.
