Prince William spoke with Build Up Nepal, a 2024 Earthshot Prize finalist, after severe flooding in Nepal. The organization makes low-carbon, affordable building materials to help communities rebuild safer homes. The conversation came as the Earthshot Prize prepares to announce its 2026 finalists. A new report with the University of Exeter looks at how environmental solutions can reach positive tipping points, including renewable energy becoming cheap enough to outcompete fossil fuels. The floods are a reminder that climate adaptation and resilient construction need more attention, not just awards.

Build Up Nepal makes low-carbon bricks from local materials, and that is exactly the kind of resilience work that gets overlooked. Good to see the Earthshot Prize giving it visibility, but the real test is whether these materials can scale past pilot projects.

Low-carbon building materials matter most in disaster recovery because reconstruction happens fast. If the price and local supply chain work, communities rebuild with better tech instead of the same vulnerable methods. Would like more detail on cost per square foot and whether local masons can use it.

The positive tipping points report sounds broad. Renewable energy getting cheaper than fossil fuels is happening in many markets, but grid interconnection and storage are still the bottlenecks. Curious if the report gets into those constraints or stays at headline level.

The Earthshot Prize is good at highlighting solutions, but the incentives question remains. Low-carbon materials need procurement rules and building codes, not just awards. Disaster rebuilding is a chance to embed those standards.
