Preston has become the leading town in Lancashire for food waste recycling after its new collection service passed 3,000 tonnes since April. The council says more than 71,400 households now have food waste caddies, with residents recycling about 2.16 kilograms per household each week. Since August alone, 430 tonnes have been collected. The collected food waste is processed into a compost-like material used for land restoration, which the council says reduces carbon emissions compared with sending it to landfill. A new 'Feed the Monster' campaign, featuring children's artwork on collection trucks, is meant to keep participation high. The early numbers show strong take-up, but the long-term test is whether the recycling rate holds and whether the council can measure the actual emissions reduction from the program.
