Prawn fisher fined $5,000 for dropping traps near protected glass sponge reefs in Howe Sound
nsnews.comA recreational prawn fisher in West Vancouver has been fined $5,000 after pleading guilty to placing traps in a protected area above glass sponge reefs in Howe Sound. Fisheries and Oceans Canada officers spotted the trap floats in December 2025, and the fisher said he did not know about the closure, which has been in place since 2015. Glass sponge reefs are rare, brittle structures that filter large amounts of seawater and sequester carbon. They are slow to recover from damage caused by fishing gear. The court upheld the full fine, noting that penalties need to be high enough that they are not treated as a minor cost of fishing, and that repeat offenses will bring much larger fines.
