Pozzlock low-carbon cement passes concrete field trials in Australia
architectureanddesign.com.auMCi Carbon's Pozzlock, a synthetic pozzolan made via mineral carbonation, was successfully tested in concrete field trials hosted by Boral in New South Wales. The material replaces up to 5% of high-emissions clinker in concrete, with potential to increase to 10% in future tests. Each tonne of Pozzlock avoids about 0.5 tonnes of CO2 by reducing clinker use, in addition to the CO2 mineralized during production. The trials included mortar testing, lab concrete trials, and full-scale mixing with two truckloads of concrete placed into test slabs. The Pozzlock mix matched conventional fly ash concrete in slump retention, air content, density, and early compressive strength. The project involves SmartCrete CRC, Transport for NSW, and UTS, and aims to validate lower-carbon materials for infrastructure.
