POSCO shifts to lithium and renewables in major portfolio reset
koreatimes.co.krPOSCO Group announced a major portfolio shift during its CEO Investor Day, adding lithium production and renewable energy as core businesses alongside its traditional steel operations. The company plans to invest 16.7 trillion won by 2028 and targets 173,000 tons of lithium capacity per year by 2033, aiming to become a top five global lithium producer. It also plans to enter offshore wind in South Korea and overseas solar markets. The move reflects a broader industrial trend: heavy industry players are pivoting toward materials and energy needed for the low carbon transition. POSCO will also expand steel capacity in India, the US, and Indonesia, and use profits from those operations to fund domestic decarbonization investments. The group expects 187 trillion won in sales and 13.1 trillion won operating profit by 2035.
