POSCO joins K-GX to build hydrogen steelmaking cluster and low-carbon steel market in Korea
biz.chosun.comPOSCO Group has joined South Korea's K-GX green transition strategy with a plan to replace coal with hydrogen in steelmaking. The centerpiece is HyREX, a hydrogen reduction process that uses iron ore fines directly and runs continuously. POSCO plans to build a 300,000 ton per year demonstration facility at Pohang by 2028, linked to clean hydrogen supply from the Pohang and Ulsan industrial complexes. The company estimates the cluster will cut emissions by 560,000 tons per year and create 14,000 jobs in the southeast region. POSCO also wants a green premium market for low-carbon steel, backed by standards and a green purchasing law, so that low-carbon steel has real demand. After Pohang, the plan is to expand the model to Gwangyang in the southwest. The key constraint is clean energy supply. Hydrogen steelmaking needs large, stable, economical power and hydrogen around the clock, so delivery will depend on how fast that infrastructure actually gets built.
