Posco and BHP partner to test iron ore for hydrogen-based HyREX steelmaking
hydrogen-central.comPosco and BHP have signed a collaboration to test BHP's Australian iron ore in Posco's HyREX process, a hydrogen-based ironmaking technology that replaces coal. The trials will check how different ore qualities affect performance, helping both companies identify suitable raw materials for commercial low-carbon steel production. The deal also includes technical exchange and work on reducing Scope 3 emissions across the supply chain. This agreement builds on a broader partnership and follows a memorandum of understanding signed in October 2025. It expands Posco's open collaboration strategy for HyREX, which already includes engineering firm Primetals Technologies. While the announcement is a step forward, actual emissions cuts depend on scaling hydrogen supply and ensuring the ore works reliably at industrial scale.
