Portsmouth City Council reports that carbon emissions across the city have fallen by more than half since 2005, a reduction of 683,324 tonnes of CO2. The council's own emissions, covering fuel and electricity it pays for, dropped by around 60 percent compared to 2012/13 levels. Gas use fell by 30 percent and electricity purchases decreased by 35 percent over that period. The council's total net carbon emissions for 2024/25 were 7,885 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. The figures come from updated Carbon Action Plans presented to the council's cabinet, following the city's 2019 climate emergency declaration. Council lead for climate change Cllr Kimberley Barrett credited the work of former climate officer Kristina Downey for the data gathering effort.
