The green character of the transition depends on clean electricity supply. In March 2026, the UK government committed £64 million to develop Port Talbot as a hub for floating offshore wind in the Celtic Sea, aiming to unlock at least 4.5 gigawatts of generation. This ties the steelworks' decarbonization directly to grid decarbonization and renewable energy deployment.
