Polish scientists develop jet fuel from straw, biomass, and CO2 for military and aviation use

The goal is to reduce reliance on imported crude oil and support NATO's single fuel concept for military vehicles, aircraft, and naval vessels. The fuel could potentially achieve a negative greenhouse gas emissions balance by absorbing more CO2 during production than it emits. The project is led by the Lukasiewicz Industrial Chemistry Institute and involves several research institutes. Initial research will start once funding is secured. The timing aligns with EU ReFuelEU Aviation rules requiring at least 20% sustainable aviation fuel by 2035, and Poland's military expansion which will drive demand for over 100,000 tons of aviation fuel annually. If successful, this technology could offer a domestic, low-carbon fuel source for both military and civilian aviation.
