Poland's BGK invests 25 million euros in pan-European biomethane fund for biogas projects

Poland's Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK) has put 25 million euros into the Swen Impact Fund for Transition 3, managed by Swen Capital Partners. The money will go toward building biogas and biomethane facilities across Europe, including in Poland, with the goal of producing nearly 20 million cubic meters of biomethane per year. Poland currently has about 400 biogas plants but only one operational biomethane plant, despite having strong raw material potential for the sector. The fund targets hard-to-decarbonize sectors like natural gas and aims to create local, low-carbon energy systems. Other investors include the European Investment Fund and Spain's Cofides. The investment aligns with the REPowerEU initiative, which targets 35 billion cubic meters of biomethane production annually across Europe. BGK's involvement also brings capital and expertise to Poland's circular economy and agricultural sector.

Poland putting 25m EUR into biomethane. They have the feedstock but only one plant running. This fund is supposed to change that. Worth watching if the projects actually break ground.

The 20 million cubic meters target is modest but realistic for a start. The real question is whether the offtake agreements exist for that biomethane. Grid injection rules vary a lot across Europe.

Exactly. 20 million cbm is about 0.2 TWh of energy. Not huge. But if they can replicate this model across several funds, the scale adds up. The interconnection and pipeline access will decide the pace.

REPowerEU target of 35 bcm by 2030 is extremely ambitious. Poland has the agricultural waste but the regulatory framework for biomethane injection is still immature. This fund is a test case for whether the policy support is actually there.

Biomethane from manure and crop residues makes sense for the circular economy. But the payback period on these plants is long. The 25m EUR from BGK is seed money. The rest of the fund needs to show commercial viability.

Swen Capital has been running this strategy since 2019. Third fund means they have some track record. Poland is late to the game compared to Germany or France. But the feedstock advantage is real if they can build the infrastructure.
