A new assessment by Carbon Gap and Sweco reveals that Poland could remove up to 85 million tonnes of CO2 per year by 2050. This potential relies heavily on natural ecosystems, including peatland restoration, afforestation, and biochar, which could help the country offset residual emissions. However, the report warns that a lack of national climate strategy and underdeveloped geological storage infrastructure are major bottlenecks. Without updated legislation and dedicated CDR targets, Poland risks missing EU climate goals and failing to utilize its capacity as a regional carbon management hub.
