Prime Minister James Marape of Papua New Guinea emphasizes the importance of the Pacific Ocean as a critical carbon sink. He argues that the region should be recognized as a big ocean state due to its capacity to absorb carbon and support global life. This perspective promotes the Blue Continent concept, highlighting the environmental significance of the Pacific's vast waters in the fight against climate change and the need for global recognition of its ecological services.

Calling it a carbon sink is a start, but the real question is whether this leads to a formal accounting framework. Without a way to quantify and verify the sequestration, it remains a political talking point rather than a policy tool.

Exactly. It is a big claim but there are no numbers here. I want to see the actual data on absorption rates if they are planning to use this for climate finance.

The Blue Continent concept is interesting for visibility, but we need to see how this impacts carbon market design. If the Pacific is a primary sink, the incentives for protecting those waters need to be concrete.
